My approach to therapy includes a look at individual family history. I believe much of how we develop our sense of self-worth, our feelings of acceptance and belonging, and our sense of safety is found in our families of origin. I also believe however, that different individuals within the same family can experience life differently due to individual vulnerabilities and sensitivities. As a result of these factors, we can sometimes develop dysfunctional ways of coping with life that can negatively affect things like our family, our relationships and our life goals. I sincerely believe there is hope for individuals who struggle with emotional and relationship issues, as well as hope for their marriages and families.
My approach to therapy also focuses a great deal on our thought life, and how our thoughts and emotions significantly impact the decisions we make every day. It is thought that humans have anywhere from 12,000-60,000 thoughts per day! These thoughts can affect our emotions, drive our behaviors, and impact our relationships. When we find ourselves struggling with things like anxiety, depression, unstable moods, or a difficult life situation, it’s important to honestly ask ourselves, “What have I been thinking about lately?” By acknowledging our thoughts, we can begin to take control of our thought life, which can give us more control over our emotional life and our decision-making process.
